Lead is an important component of paint. The coatings themselves have chemical properties and contain harmful substances such as formaldehyde. Lead-containing paints are mainly caused by lead compounds found in paint pigments, such as yellow lead oxide, red lead, and lead white. Because they can keep the paint color bright for a long time, the more vivid the paint color, the more likely it is to contain a large amount of lead. Therefore, light-colored coatings are safer than dark-colored coatings because they contain less lead.
Dark-colored coatings can be deodorized artificially.
There are many products on the market for removing odors during decoration, such as those that remove formaldehyde. Purchasing these deodorizing products can help mitigate the hazards of dark-colored coatings to some extent, but they cannot fundamentally eliminate them. It is unwise to say that we should not use dark-colored coatings just because they contain slightly more lead than light-colored coatings. We should open the house for ventilation for a few months after the painting is done and use deodorizing products to remove odors.
Methods to prevent lead poisoning.
There are some simple methods to prevent lead poisoning, such as regularly cleaning floors and windowsills weekly, vacuuming carpets; urging children to wash their hands frequently, especially before eating; ensuring a high intake of iron and calcium in children's diets and low fat can help reduce the absorption of lead from the environment.
